WhatsApp to stop working on popular smartphones from Jan 1

December 24, 2019 0
WhatsApp to stop working on popular smartphones from Jan 1

In what appeared to be a setback for millions around the world, WhatsApp has revealed that its app will stop working on Windows smartphones next week.

The announcement was made in May this year and the deadline has finally arrived aimed at improving security features of the messaging-app that is already battling with serious issues of hacking worldwide from the Israeli company.

As Microsoft will drop support for Windows 10 Mobile in December of this year, the popular WhatsApp messaging app will also stop working on Windows phones after December 31, 2019.

“Because we will no longer actively develop for these platforms, some features may stop functioning at any time,” the company emphasized in a blog post.

It said: “You’ll no longer be able to use all Windows Phone operating systems after December 31, 2019, and WhatsApp might not be available in the Microsoft Store after July 1, 2019.”

The app will also stop working on Android versions 2.37. and older and iOS 7 and older after February 1, 2020.

However, all those affected from the decision could avoid loss of data by using some simple methods.

Open the chat you wish to export, and tap on Group Info. Scroll down and tap ‘Export Chat’. You’ll then be given the option to download the chat with or without media – note the attaching media will generate a larger chat archive.

Oppo A8 Launch Expected Soon, Specifications Surface on TENAA and a Leaked Promotional Poster
Oppo A8, an upcoming smartphone from the Chinese smartphone maker, has been spotted on the Chinese regulator TENAA's website. An alleged poster showing the phone has also popped up online and claims to reveal the phone's design and other details. The TENAA listing suggests that the successor of the Oppo A7 will see an update on the camera front, at the least. The Oppo A7 was launched in November last year, so a successor should launch before the end of this year. The phone was listed on the poster alongside a new Oppo A91 phone, the Oppo Reno 3 and Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G.

Starting with the TENAA listing, an Oppo smartphone carrying model number PDBM00 has been listed on the regulator's website. This phone is believed to be Oppo A8. The listing shows the phone running on Android Pie, and packing a 6.5-inch HD (720x1600 pixels) TFT display. The phone is powered by an unnamed 2.3GHz octa-core processor, paired with 4GB RAM. Internal storage is listed to be at 128GB with the option to expand further using a microSD (up to 256GB) card slot.

If the listing is any indication, Oppo A8 should pack a triple rear camera setup – with one 12-megapixel sensor, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel shooter. Up front, the phone has an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It will also include Micro-USB port, measure 163.9x75.5x8.3mm, and weigh 180 grams. The Oppo A8 is listed to pack a 4,230mAh battery, and should be available in Black, White, Green, and Red colour options.

The images attached with the TENAA listing show a waterdrop-style notch on the Oppo A8, triple rear camera setup at the back aligned vertically and placed on the top left of the back panel. The phone is seen sporting a rear fingerprint sensor, power button on the right edge of the screen, and the volume buttons on the left. To recall, the predecessor Oppo A7 was launched in November last year, and it came with a dual camera setup, and a Snapdragon 450 SoC.

The leaked poster on Weibo reiterates that same specifications and design aesthetic. The phone is seen in Red, Black, and White colour options, and the triple camera setup at the back is visible. The leak reiterates that the Oppo A8 will have a 6.5-inch display, 128GB internal storage, and a 4,230mAh battery.

The poster has listed other phones as well, namely a new Oppo A91 phone. It is seen sporting a waterdrop-style notch, a quad camera setup at the back placed vertically, and Red, Black and White colour options in gradient finishes. The phone is listed to pack a 48-megapixel main camera, an 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and VOOC 3.0 fast charging support.

The upcoming Oppo Reno 3 and Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G have also been listed in the poster, and the Reno 3 is seen to sport a waterdrop-style design, a quad camera setup at the back, 64-megapixel main camera, and 5G support. The Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G, on the other hand, is seen to sport a hole-punch display, and a quad camera setup at the back. The phone is listed to offer 90Hz display, 7.7mm thickness, and 5G support. The two phones are set to launch on December 26. The poster also mentions the upcoming Enco Free wireless earbuds that are set to launch alongside the Reno 3 series. The earbuds have been listed in Gold, White, and Black finishes.

WhatsApp Snooping Issue: Facebook India Executive Appears Before Parliamentary Panel
Facebook's India Public Policy Director Ankhi Das on Friday submitted to a parliamentary panel probing the WhatsApp snooping scandal that the social media platform has an end-to-end encryption and it renders any effort to access the communication between its two users "unlikely from its end", sources said. The parliamentary standing committee on Information Technology headed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday called the cyber security experts to hear their views on the issue of citizens data security and privacy.

As per the notice of the meeting, the panel had also called non-official witnesses of the WhatsApp snooping row, including BJP''s former organisational secretary Govindacharya, who was represented by his lawyer in the meeting.

Representatives of WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, and the officials of Telecom and Union Home Ministry and Delhi chief secretary were also called by the panel, the notice read.

WhatsApp was represented by Das, public policy director, Facebook India, South and Central Asia, who told the panel that it is unlikely to breach the end-to-end encryption of the social media platform from its end, sources said.

Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash and officials of the Home Ministry also appeared before the panel.

In a letter to the panel''s members, Tharoor had earlier said that "Cybersecurity is a major issue on our agenda" and "we are definitely going to take this up under that rubric. And we will be seeking clarifications from the government."

In October, Facebook-owned WhatsApp said Indian journalists and human rights activists were among those globally spied upon by unidentified entities, using an Israeli spyware -- Pegasus.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has over 1.5 billion users globally, of which India accounts for about 400 million.

Meanwhile, the WhatsApp had said it was suing NSO Group, an Israeli surveillance firm, that is reportedly behind the technology that helped unnamed entities hack into phones of roughly 1,400 users.

Microsoft Reveals Age of Empires IV With Next-Gen Graphics

November 16, 2019 0
Microsoft Reveals Age of Empires IV With Next-Gen Graphics
The fan-favorite medieval strategy game Age of Empires is finally coming back after 14 years.

As expected, Age of Empires 4 will be leaps and bounds ahead of its last iteration that came out in 2005. The recent gameplay trailer shows significant graphical improvements and a short look at some of the gameplay as well.

The trailer starts with a magical glowing eagle flying about in the scene. It seems that it’s going to be a scout that reveals unexplored areas, even though Age of Empires was never known to be a fantasy-style video game unlike its Age of Mythology counterpart.

All the other aspects appear to be the same as the classic series with a refresh that makes it feel more like a 2019 game. There are classic guard towers, stone walls, wooden walls, dense vegetation, and towering structures in a small civilization that players can set up as they please.
Several familiar elements can be seen in the trailer, such as the building that produces cavalry units, a priest that can make enemy units friendly (yes, the same wololo priest), and villagers that construct buildings and obtain resources.

Military units were also the same including basic infantry units, horse riding cavalry units, siege towers and leaders that inspire their pack of armies giving them certain buffs.
As always, all the structures and human units are lined up with blue stripes to indicate friendly units and red for enemies.

The release date for Age of Empires IV is currently unknown, but it has been confirmed for Xbox in the trailer. It is highly likely to arrive on PC as well since it has always been a part of the PC community.

We will keep you posted as soon as more details are revealed.
